About Devan Beharry

After graduating from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Mathematics under the Honours Actuarial Science program, I began working in the financial services industry and quickly became involved and interested in challenging data insight problems. At Manulife Asset Management, I began constructing ex-ante predictive models of portfolio performance in order to root out the salient macroeconomic conditions that were instrumental in determining portfolio returns. Following this experience, I returned to Trinidad and Tobago to work for Gencon Limited, a family company that was in the middle of an industry-change. My experiences there demonstrated the importance of understanding the winning aspirations of a firm and how its core competencies must be focused in order to derive long-term strategy for success. I joined the Rotman Full Time MBA program in order to develop my skills, knowledge and network to bridge my natural aptitude and love for statistics and the exploration of root-cause phenomena with higher-order strategic, innovative, and “big picture” thinking to maximize my ability to have true impact for my stakeholders – both professional and personal. As such, I am an aspiring data scientist particularly interested in exercise science and the growing competitive e-sports industry. I am fascinated by the growing demand for sophisticated insights about why winning methods are what they are and how they can be refined and implemented easily for everyone else.
