About Devin Mills

As an Assistant Professor at Texas Tech University, my research for nearly a decade has been rooted in the study of behavioral addictions, particularly Gambling Disorder (GD) and Problem Video Gaming (PVG). My primary research objective is to discern the factors contributing to these disorders as well as identify those that encourage responsible play in both gambling and video gaming. The emerging trends of increased gambling legalization and the "gamblification" of video gaming - which includes phenomena like loot boxes, esports betting, and skin betting - are escalating the prevalence of these disorders. This surge presents a looming societal concern, and as such, forms the basis of my investigation. My contributions to the scientific community include applying social psychological theories to understand GD and PVG, examining individual differences associated with these disorders, and exploring current gambling and video gaming trends that have a bearing on GD, PVG, or both.In tandem with my academic role, I serve as the President of the Texas Coalition on Problem Gambling. This Texas-based 501(c)(3) organization is committed to promoting safer gambling and mobilizing resources to combat GD. Our mission is not just imperative, but urgent, given the current socio-gaming landscape.
