About Devin Toohey

I’m a communications strategist with a background in writing, education, and telling stories. For over a decade, I’ve helped people navigate complicated, high-stakes moments, whether it’s a student figuring out how to write about their life in 650 words, or a company figuring out how to speak clearly (and compassionately) during a crisis. I’ve worn more hats than a Gilded Age character: founder of an education startup, DEI board member, social media manager, curriculum designer, tutor wrangler, and high-profile client handler. I’m often the go-to person when a student is spiraling, a parent is panicking, or 90 pages of policy updates need to be turned into a three-sentence summary. I lead with empathy, stay focused on outcomes, and try to keep things human (and occasionally funny). Some wins I’m proud of: • Built a storytelling-focused tutoring business from scratch, growing our client base 400% and shifting the entire prep calendar (and yes, income) forward • Chaired DEI hiring and retention efforts in a high-turnover field • Led sensitive communications through COVID, political protests, and international conflicts, balancing values with reputational risk • Helped hundreds of students find their voices on the page I have a Ph.D. in English, which means I have professionally lectured on subjects ranging from Renaissance revenge tragedy to queer themes in X-Men. Right now, I’m looking to bring my skills to a mission-driven organization that needs someone who can see the big picture, write the right words, and keep a sense of humor while doing it.
