About Devon Barone

I've returned to my native San Francisco Bay Area, after living and working around the US and world - most recently for five years in Hornopirén, Chile. Years of experience working in science communication and research, receiving my Masters of Natural Resources with a focus in the human dimensions of wildlife management, and gaining fluency in Spanish have prepared me well for work in stakeholder engagement of natural resource issues. As the capstone project for my Graduate Certificate in Wildlife Management, I carried out a qualitative study of the factors impacting livestock-predator conflict mitigation by ranchers in the county of Hualaihué, Chile, and interviewed livestock producers about their perspectives and experiences around this issue. To complete my Masters, I carried out a study to identify indicators of human wellbeing for the stakeholders of two Chilean marine protected areas, which will be included in their management plans in order to monitor the impact of these protected areas on the lives of the people who depend upon them. My extensive education, through academia, reading, and experiential learning, of the innerworkings and complexities of the world’s ecosystems has provided me with a deep understanding and appreciation of what it means for an ecosystem to be healthy. My diverse life and work experience, as an environmental educator, representative of protected areas, researcher, traveler, volunteer, member of a rural Chilean community, and a university student in Florida, New Zealand, and Tanzania, has provided me with a unique depth of understanding of the complexities of the world's socio-ecological systems. This knowledge and experience combined with a lifelong love and passion for wildlife conservation are the keys to a fruitful career working together with local communities to improve their relationships with their natural environment.
