Background
About Devon Pyper
As a long-term substitute teacher at Central Kitsap, Bremerton School and Peninsula School Districts, I have demonstrated my versatility and expertise in teaching various subjects, levels, and modalities, with a focus on French and mid-level Math. I have developed and implemented immersive and standards-based French language instruction for French 1st through 4th year classes, including AP French, in both face-to-face and live-streaming formats. I have also adapted my teaching with different math curricula and student needs, from upper elementary to high school levels, with most recent student-teacher experience concentrating on 9th grade Algebra and 12th grade Financial Math, and long-term substitute experiences teaching Algebra and Geometry. For the remainder of this past school year, I was hand-picked to teach French at Peninsula High School in Gig Harbor. I utilized my previous French immersion teaching experiences with the previous teacher's comprehensible input approach to foster a student-centered, project-based learning environment where the students developed their French fluency, which culminated in a final presentation of their individual learning. The data collected from individual student feedback for each of the classes that I taught, regardless of students' French grade level, shows that the majority of the students felt they increased their French fluency, felt more comfortable communicating both orally and in written form, and favored the project-based approach through the Circular Learning Model that I emphasized when designing and delivering my lessons. In addition to my French and Math teaching credentials, I have a strong background in teaching ELL/ESL, as well as curriculum building and design. I recently completed an alternative certification route program at City University, with endorsements in K-8 and middle math, and participated as a candidate teacher in the StarTalk Korean Language program at City University. I have also worked as a local advocate at Graduation Alliance, where I supported at-risk students and families with academic mentorship and social services. My mission is to provide engaging and effective learning experiences for diverse and multicultural learners, combining my language expertise and math knowledge, to reach students wherever they are. I believe each and every student can find and experience academic success, and I strive to meet and exceed that expectation with perseverance, excitement and determination.
