About Devry Caperton

Ever since I was a child, I have looked at myself as a social butterfly because that is always what my mom had called me. Although, I distinctly remember a time in 3rd grade when I was learning the butterfly transformation process and being fascinated by it. Butterflies are inspiring because they remind us of nature’s fundamental promise: it is possible to change. I like to reflect on all the lessons learned of the butterfly initially being a caterpillar and then emerging into the beautiful butterfly everyone knows and loves. It is important to recognize the importance of each stage and what I learned through this transformation and growth. The Caterpillar Stage The main task for a caterpillar is to eat as much as possible to fuel the growth that will take place in the chrysalis. It is important to me to consume as much knowledge, training, and experiences as I can. I have attended workshops, I have joined MANY clubs and committees, I plan on doing internships, and I am always looking for more job experiences. This stage is exciting, brings a lot of inspiration, and brings a need for creativity to continue to the next stage. The Butterfly Stage After breaking free from the chrysalis, the butterfly must wait before taking flight due to wet, folded wings. I like to make sure that each task I do is done to the best of my abilities. Once I feel ready to present a certain project, I take a risk and build up the courage to take flight and move forward with the process, while recognizing how fragile my new “wings” (ideas) may be. The function of a butterfly is to carry pollen from plant to plant, helping fruits, vegetables, and flowers to produce new seeds. Although I have fully developed into an adult, the responsibility still is not lost. Through my experiences with volunteering, jobs, and extra-curricular activities I can now help others out. I can now take charge and lead by example. I do not judge my progress and am mindful and content with where I am. I can also use my experience to plant new seeds and come up with new ideas. I am driven and once I start a task, I am committed to it and find purpose in everything I do. Transformation is not a one-time incident. There is strategy with adapting to environments and making the most of what is available to me. I am always learning and always growing. It is important to know that life is equally about earning your wings and what you do once you have them. I am not only a social butterfly like my mom always says, but a trustworthy, enthusiastic, disciplined, dedicated, and creative one as well.
