About Diego de Leo

Diego De Leo is Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at Griffith University in Brisbane. Professor De Leo was President of the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and co-founder and Past-President of the International Academy for Suicide Research (IASR). He was the initiator (2003) of the World Suicide Prevention Day (10 September). He is the author of over 500 articles in international journals, 190 book chapters and 60 volumes. He was the founder and editor-in-chief of the Italian Journal of Suicidology and of Quaderni di Psicoterapia, founder of the international journals Archives of Suicide Research (New York), Shanghai Archives of Psychiatry (since 2018 General Psychiatry, Shanghai), and Iranian Journal of Suicide Research (Tehran). He is Director of the Department of Psychology at Primorska University, Slovenia, and Director of the Slovenian Center for Suicide Research. Professor De Leo is President of the Italian Association of Psychogeriatrics and promoter of the national day to fight loneliness. He participated in numerous international committees and task forces to contribute to improving the quality of data on suicide-related mortality and the classification of suicidal behaviors and to the creation of new clinical and research tools. He has provided consultancy on suicide prevention to the American (National Health Institute, American Army), Canadian (Ministry of Health), Dutch (Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu), Belgian (Research Foundation Flanders), British (National Health System, Medical Research Council), Irish (Ministry of Health, Irish Research Council), Serbian (Research Council of the Republic of Serbia), Slovenian (Slovenian Research Agency – ARRS), Kosovo (Ministry of Health), South Africa (National Research Foundation ), to the government of Iran (Public Health Institute), of Malaysia (Ministry of Health), of Hong Kong SAR (Public Health Institute), of Japan (Ministry of Internal Affairs), to the Australian government (Ministry of Health, Australian Research Council, National Health and Medical Research Council, Beyondblue, Ombudsman of Australia, Federal Police), of New Zealand (New Zealand Research Council), of Tonga (Ministry of Health), of French Polynesia (Ministere de la Sante' Publique et de la Population Haiti) and to the Italian government (Ministry of Health, Ministry of the Interior).
