About Diego Desousa

Hello there! My name is Diego, I am a current undergraduate student at Bowdoin College looking to pursue a PhD and a future career in biomedical research. I am particularly passionate about the fields of developmental genetics and stem cells / regenerative medicine. Along with my current position as a Peer Advisor at Bowdoin's Career Development & Exploration Center and Learning Assistant for Principles of Biology, I am conducting my own Honors research project in the Jackman Lab, characterizing the genes that control zebrafish embryonic tooth development. This past summer I participated in the Columbia Amgen Scholars Program for a research project investigating follicle stem cell regulation in the Drosophila ovary. My past research experience includes an REU at the American Museum of Natural History where I investigated genomic damage patterns of formalin-fixed vertebrate museum specimens, as well as a summer program at the Plant Genomics Department of Michigan State University where I studied DNA methylation and TE expression in clonal angiosperms. I'm excited to keep gaining research experience as I continue my education in the biological sciences!
