About Diego Valiante

Personal views only. Diego Valiante is Team Leader on macroprudential policies for Non-Bank Financial Intermediation (NBFI) at the European Commission (DG Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union, FISMA) and Adjunct Professor of Foundations of Financial Markets Regulation at Bologna University. At the European Commission, he coordinates the team working on macroprudential policies for NBFI and represents the institution in various international fora, including the Financial Stability Board and the European Systemic Risk Board. Since joining the European Commission in July 2016, he has been involved in several key EU projects, including the development of the 2020 Capital Markets Union action plan and the implementation of key actions (e.g, withholding tax, insolvency, ESA review, etc.), a banking union proposal (EDIS), the 2018 sustainable finance action plan, the first European digital finance consultation paper, and the crowdfunding proposal. Diego also served as co-Rapporteur of the high-level group of the European Commission on Capital Markets Union. Before joining the European Commission, Diego advised several international organisations, including the European Parliament, European Commission, European Central Bank, IOSCO, and a number of institutional investors. Between 2014 and 2016, he was a member of the Group of Economic Advisers (GEA) to the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA). Between 2009 and 2016, he was Head of Financial Markets and Institutions at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS), a top European think tank, and Head of Research at the European Capital Markets Institute (ECMI). Between 2013 and 2017, he was an equity partner of the Italian-UK business accelerator ‘iStarter’. In 2011, Financial News listed him among the rising stars in ‘trading and technology’ under 40 in EMEA. Diego holds a Ph.D. in Law and Economics from LUISS University, a Joint LL.M. in Law and Economics from Erasmus University Rotterdam and Bologna University, a M.Sc in Economic Analysis of Law and a Bachelor degree in Business Economics. He is the author of numerous publications in the fields of financial law and economics, capital markets, digital finance, central banking, and competition policy.
