Background

About Diptak Bhattacharya

Specializing in materials characterization and testing, I've amassed 10 years of experience in materials engineering. I am passionate about applying physical metallurgy concepts to develop new materials, study their microstructure at multiple length-scales, and test their deformation and failure characteristics. After my undergraduate degree in materials engineering, my excitement in this field grew exponentially through my practical experiences as a Product Technologist in Tata Steel Ltd, the largest steel manufacturing company in India. Today, I'm still doing what I love the most. As a Ph.D. candidate in the Materials Engineering Department at Colorado School of Mines, I am trying to solve one of the biggest challenges faced by the automotive industry at the moment -"liquid metal embrittlement" associated with welded joints of galvanized advanced steels. Successes achieved during my Ph.D. include- Established the key microstructural and compositional factors influencing the cracking susceptibility of advanced steels during elevated temperature joining/stamping operations. The results from our work have been published in four international peer-review journals- Represented Colorado School of Mines at the prestigious "North American Materials Colloquium Series"- My paper titled "Liquid metal embrittlement during resistance spot welding of Zn-coated steels" published in 2018 has been cited over 50 times and has been recognized with multiple international awards. When I am not working, I am either spending time with my friends or reading materials-related bulletins and journal articles. I am constantly inspired by the fascinating progresses in science and wish to contribute more to advances in the materials fraternity. Specialties: Microstructural (SEM/EBSD/XRD/FIB/TEM), compositional (EDS/SIMS/APT/OES), and mechanical (tensile, bulk/micro hardness, gleeble) characterization; processing-structure-property correlation; failure analysis
