Background

About Dirk Repsilber

As a professor in Functional Bioinformatics at Örebro University, my mission is to integrate research and teaching in this multidisciplinary field. Since 2017, our projects span medical, biomedical, biological, and chemical research, along with core bioinformatics methods Personal Development My interest in genetic regulatory networks began during my PhD at the University of Hamburg, completed in Postdoctoral work at Uppsala University and SLU, Uppsala, introduced me to microarray gene expression studies and functional bioinformatics. In 2003, at the University of Lübeck, I analyzed molecular profiles in clinical studies and provided biostatistics counseling. Later, at the University of Potsdam, I focused on multivariate statistical analysis and integrative analyses. In 2007, I led a Biomathematics and Bioinformatics group at the Leibniz Institute for Farm Animal Biology, focusing on pooled profile data and genome-wide SNP-data analysis. Now, I aim to advance integrative bioinformatics for medical research, offering cross-disciplinary teaching and Research Interests My core interest is biosignature screening, both in data analysis and methods development. Collaborations with clinical medicine and biomedicine provide specific problems and datasets. I work with biostatisticians and biomathematicians to develop methods using functional network knowledge and biosignature results to understand regulatory structures. This involves modeling, data handling, result interpretation, and biostatistical consultation. My research is cross-disciplinary, involving medicine, molecular biology, statistics, computer science, physics, and mathematics, focusing on the genotype-phenotype map in health and Education and Supervision My research requires cross-disciplinary communication skills to interact with various scientific fields. I have taught medical doctors, biologists, and computer scientists in interdisciplinary courses at all academic levels. My supervisory experience includes PhD students from diverse backgrounds. As a leader of junior research groups and Head of Unit for Biomathematics and Bioinformatics, I managed collaborations within Germany, Sweden, and internationally. I use a problem-based teaching approach in functional bioinformatics, fostering deep learning and trans-disciplinary understanding. I also established a Statistical Bioinformatics Counseling activity for knowledge transfer and future collaborations within and outside Örebro University.
