About Doc Arnett

After forty-one years in public education, I have started a new career that blends together my creative interests and writing, public speaking and graphic design. Since January 3rd of 2019, I have been the director of marketing and public relations at South Central Kansas Medical Center. I have found the complexity of the job to be stimulating and rewarding. In additional to writing press releases and composing frequent posts on social media, I lead planning for our annual mudrun/fundraiser event. September 21st will mark our 5th year. In addition to soliciting sponsors and donors, I am instigating the addition of a few new obstacles and a brand new component: the Hospital Olympics! We are planning an Urinal Relay, Bedpan Dash, IV Bag Toss (like an egg toss), and a 3-Person Stretcher Carry using some old style canvas stretchers. Beyond the creativity of writing, designing obstacles for the mudrun and working with others to plan and carry out a major event, I find the most rewarding part of this job is getting recognition for other people. I love doing feature articles on our employees and posting social media pieces about the great things that our people do! A new experience for me that is definitely "stretching" me is leading a $100K fundraiser for recruiting new physicians to our community. If we hit this goal by December 31, 2019, the Warrender Trust which is administered by the Legacy Foundation, will kick in another $50K! Currently, five of our seven staff physicians are of retirement age. Although we hope that they will be able to continue working for several more years, we know that we MUST attract new doctors to Ark City. It is essential to providing high quality health service to this area. I am learning a lot and slowly gaining confidence-and hopefully, expertise! Making this career change has been a little scary and very stimulating! I work with a terrific group of people and have the kind of boss (Jeff Bowman, CEO) that I would like to be.
