Background
About Dom Taylor
Having been accepted for a place on a hotel management course when I returned to England from Zimbabwe. I found it hard to wait for the new term and saw a job offer in the local press for a trainee insurance broker in a high street shop and successfully applied. Within two years I was number two in the branch of 12 staff and opened my own 'cold start' in West London in the 80s before finding myself back at the original Brighton operation as manager 3 years later. The following year Paul Scully (The regional manager) and I opened our own brokerage. This same business was bought by CCV in April 2010 at which time I managed it through the transition to becoming part of Crawford Davis. At the time Joe Simmons, who became a good friend, was MD and the business won group broker of the year in 2011 as a result of performance against budget. I would like to think that much of this was down the Joe's enlightened recommendation for acquiring Paul's and my business which realised well in excess of the budgeted first year growth. In 2012 Joe was promoted to a regional role and I took over as MD inheriting a tremendously gifted and loyal team of hardworking individuals as luck would have it. In 2014 I was appointed Area Trading Director looking after a small group of Sussex based Towergate businesses. Following the decision by the company to open the Manchester call centre a great deal of our business was then handled there resulting in a shrinkage of the area I managed. In September 2015 I realised I was best suited to a new role outside of the group as the company structure had changed drastically. Hence my involvement with QCIS who valued my expertise and this felt like a real 'coming home' to a role where I could truly make a difference and quickly. Quality Care Group was then a pure care insurance broker but, in speaking to the MD over a good few coffees we both realised there was huge potential in cross selling to the existing customer base most of whom owned businesses beyond care. I set about creating a general insurance division within QCIS by getting buy-in from many consolidators and MGAs to my business plan. Fairly quickly we started selling commercial insurance to those clients for these clients from a one-off let property to groups of hotels. I have since passed the division onto new colleagues who I am confident can takeit to the next level. In the meantime QCG are now a complete care broker offering services well beyond insurance to the sector from energy to recruitment and everything in between so my role has widened appreciably.
