Background
About Don Gillard
About Don is a multidisciplinary designer whose career spans industrial design, digital innovation, and sustainable material development. With expertise in 3D design across sectors—including product, motorbike, boat, furniture, and stage design—he brings a rare blend of technical precision and creative vision to every project. As a WordPress website designer and front-end developer, Don combines aesthetic sensibility with functional UX design, crafting digital experiences that are both intuitive and impactful. A creative thinker and problem solver, Don is known for his exceptional productivity and uncompromising quality standards. His work has earned the trust of international clients and Fortune 500 companies, including Disney, NBC, and MGM Studios, for whom he has designed stage sets, props, animations, and websites. Education & Professional Background Don holds a diploma in Industrial Design from Emily Carr College of Art & Design. He served as Art Director at MVKA Productions for over a decade, leading the design of sets and stages for global events. His design portfolio includes product development for retail, hospitality, and professional office environments, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and innovation. Sustainable Design & Material Innovation Don’s commitment to sustainable design is exemplified by the Clubist Chair (1992), a minimalist reinterpretation of the traditional club chair that dramatically reduced material usage. In 1994, he received the R2D2 Grant for his pioneering seating suspension system made from recycled tires. While at Langara College’s Makerspace, Don partnered with The Jim Pattison Group to repurpose vinyl from highway billboards—transforming waste into functional products such as bike bags, tote bags, and oversized fan covers. His ongoing research explores the transformation of non-recyclable plastics (e.g, bread bags, carrot packaging, sandwich bags) into high-performance composites used as sustainable alternatives to leather. Recognition & Awards • Okanagan Arts Award for Design (2011): Honoring excellence in industrial and product design • Okanagan Arts Award Nominee in Media Arts (2012): Recognized for innovation in responsive web design
