About Don Moffatt

Driven by the need to find insights in everything I encounter, my experience, education, and skills cover a wide range. That enables me to be a “full-stack” data scientist: establish requirements, gather data, design experiments, create models and algorithms, build software tools and communicate findings. I am currently enrolled in Ng's "Deep Learning Specialization". I completed the Data Science Specialization via Johns Hopkins University and earned certificates in R Programming and other areas (e.g. Machine Learning, Regression Models, Statistical Inference). I have used PowerBI but I prefer to work in R or Python: I am an advocate for Reproducible Research and use my exceptional writing skills to create clear, explanatory comments that include the rationale for the code structure and choices. I am a Lean Six Sigma "Green Belt", and have taken project management courses and led projects. I received a Pacific Leaders Scholarship in 2011 to study Business Analysis at the University of British Columbia (in association with the Sauder School of Business), and completed the certificate programme in 2013 with a 93% average, earning an A+ in every course. I also hold a B.Sc. in Astronomy (Astrophysics) from the University of Victoria. In addition to my strong analytical and communications background I'm told by my supervisors and coworkers that my so-called "soft skills" are very strong, including leadership abilities. Examples of my past work include the following- Leading the development of a government policy - Creating an NLP word prediction app in R - Sentiment analysis of HR tickets - Suggested/carried out a data science study of government scholarship distributions and made recommendations- 2nd place in an international web programming contest - 2+ years as a student Research Assistant at the University of Victoria's Climenhaga Observatory- Communications work on behalf of the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics (public lectures and media work)- Three successful federal funding proposals (one NSERC, one Industry Canada), three Victoria Foundation, one CRD, and one provincial Gaming Grant- Eight years as federal government contractor (National Research Council)- Running my own consulting business for six years - Wrote features for The Globe and Mail and other publications - 5+ years as a post-graduate instructor at the University of Victoria (classroom and online)- Developed a web front-end for the database of an undersea oceanographic observatory (VENUS) in addition to constructing the website and producing graphics for the media.
