About Donato Romano

Donato Romano received the M.Sc. degrees in Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Science and Technologies (with Honours) from the University of Pisa, Italy, in 2014. He received the PhD in BioRobotics (with Honours) from Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, Pisa, Italy, in 2018. He is currently Associate Professor at The BioRobotics Institute, Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna. His main research interests include bioinspired and biomimetic robotics, animal-robot interactions, biohybrid systems, ethorobotics, neuroethology, evolution. He also studies the ecology and behavior of animal species of economic and medical-veterinary interest, with the aim of developing innovative engineered technologies able to control the dynamics of their populations through new eco-compatible principles. He worked at Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi (UAE), where he carried out research activities in the framework of recent advances in methods of using Terahertz (THz) frequency band to study the interaction between radiation and biological molecules and tissues. He is co-founder of the HUBILIFE srl (innovative startup and spin-off of Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna), aimed at developing and commercializing “bio-inspired” devices in order to improve the human daily life. Romano has published more than 100 studies on highly-ranked international journals with impact factor. His H-index is 27 (Scopus, 2025). He is Member of the Editorial Board for different international scientific journals. Romano is the Coordinator, PI, or partner of several international research projects.
