About Donovan Smith
Current MD/PhD candidate at the University of Calgary researching in the field of preclinical neuroscience. My current graduate work focuses on understanding how spinal cord injury impairs heart health, and the mechanisms by which epidural spinal stimulation can help protect the cardiovascular system by regulating blood pressure in this injury model. Outside of academia, I am passionate about volunteering, specifically with individuals who have intellectual disabilities. Over the last 9 years, I have worked with numerous organizations that focus on breaking down the stigma that unfortunately still surrounds the intellectually disabled community. These include: Between Friends, motionball for Special Olympics, and Special Olympics Alberta. After finishing my PhD, I will be joining the MD Class of 2029 at the Cumming School of Medicine. In my spare time, I am an avid musician, love to watch movies, and enjoy playing squash and cycling.
