About Dora Watkins

I serve as Director of the Bachelor of Social Work Program and Teaching Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where I lead with a vision for equity in learning that is experiential, active and relational, and justice-centered. In this role, I aim to cultivate pathways that prepare students from diverse backgrounds to thrive in their academic journeys and enter the profession ready to meet the complexities and nuances of social work in real world settings.As an educator, I approach teaching as both creative and communal. I frame the arts not only as expression, but as knowledge production, critical engaged pedagogy, and transformative praxis. In my classrooms, creativity is mobilized to disrupt dominant narratives, surface embodied wisdom, and open new possibilities for how students engage with theory and practice.My current research interrogates psychosocial development and resilience among racialized communities, with a particular focus on the lived experiences, wisdom, and embodied knowledge of Afro-descendent women. Through my dissertation, I developed Endarkened Adaptive Systems Theory (EAST) and the RARE Spaces framework to reimagine resilience, healing, and storytelling as communal practices of survival and transformation.Across teaching, research, and leadership, my work is guided by three goals: 1) democratizing knowledge production, 2) amplifying the arts as essential for social justice, and 3) reimagining resilience beyond individualized narratives.I am passionate about building bridges between research, practice, and the arts — and about co-creating spaces where cultural resilience, healing, and justice can flourish.
