About Doris Dippold

I’m a linguist passionate about the power of language and culture to shape how we think, speak, write and communicate with machines and one another. My work spans research, teaching, and consultancy at the intersection of human-machine interaction and intercultural communication. As part of my applied research, I work with public and private sector partners to bring insights from sociolinguistics and pragmatics insights into conversational AI. This includes advising on chatbot dialogue design to improve user experience, accessibility and usability in healthcare and public service contexts. I direct the MA in Intercultural Business Communication and Marketing at the University of Surrey, a programme which considers the central role of language and communication in marketing and business contexts, in particular in relation to digital and human-machine interaction. I also design and deliver accessible learning experiences—my MOOC “Communicating with Diverse Audiences” on FutureLearn has reached learners in over 150 countries. I’m a fellow of the Surrey Institute for People Centred AI and a committee member of the BAAL HUMALA Special Interest Group.
