About Doug Aitken

As the Executive Director of the Sustainable Minerals Institute's International Centre of Excellence, I work with the SMI-ICE-Chile team and our collaborators to develop research-based solutions that support the transition to a more sustainable global society. We focus on the design and development of R&D projects and professional training that maximise industry value to society and minimise adverse social and environmental impacts. We collaborate closely with industry partners, colleagues at the University of Queensland, and local and international academic institutions, the public sector, and civil society. The R&D areas that I am personally involved in include sustainable water resource management, climate change risk analysis and risk mitigation, innovative mine waste management, the implementation of circular economy principles, local socio-economic development and strategic thinking and planning. I have experience working on and leading projects to develop applied research solutions to sustainability challenges in the United Kingdom, Cambodia, Israel, Chile, Perú, Argentina and Colombia.
