About Doug Bourne

I graduated from Simon Fraser University with a degree in kinesiology before moving to Montreal to study physiotherapy at McGill. Since graduating I have practiced extensively in outpatient orthopaedics and sports physiotherapy and completed numerous postgraduate clinical courses. I completed the Certificate of the Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute and became a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physiotherapy in Desiring a better understanding of the role of biomechanics in physiotherapy, I completed a MSc degree studying shoulder biomechanics at the University of British Columbia. My MSc studies left me with the burning question of what effect does biomechanics have on our bodies at a tissue and cellular level. If we can better understand how our tissues are injured and how our cells react, then we can better understand how to promote healing. With this in mind I went to the University of Calgary to obtain a PhD in cartilage injury biomechanics. Currently, I am exploring the role of virtual reality technologies such as motion controls and the Wii balance board in rehabilitation. I believe that these technologies not only have the potential to improve treatment outcomes but also to make rehabilitation a lot more fun.
