About Doug Killin

I am committed to developing teachers and institutions that master the art of bringing student's to a metacognitive understanding of themselves. I am deeply committed to the belief that success in education arises when we provide all constituents with the tools they need to be successful. This springs from my philosophy that all children or adults for that matter can do well if they are provided with the right resources. I believe that students need a nurturing environment in order to excel, and teachers and administrators are no different. Everyone performs better when provided with support and encouragement. Unfortunately, caring is not enough. Master teaching comes from teaching diagnostically. If we could just nurture our students to academic success, there would be no need for remedial programs. Both a nurturing attitude and professional competency are essential. A good teacher will keep working, presenting information to a student in new ways until that student is able to succeed. These successes in diagnostic teaching bring us back, day after day, week after week, and year after year. I am constantly motivated by the unexpected successes I see all around me. I am motivated by watching a student who was once told he or she could never learn graduate. I am driven by the teacher who finally develops a way of presenting the material that is accessible to every student. I am inspired when parents realize, for the first time, how brave their child is for facing the difficulty of coming to school every day. I take my inspiration from these people, and it changes the way I interact with others and the way I teach.
