About Doug Williams

I have been a professional archaeologist and heritage manager since 1992 and have undertaken large-scale complex archaeological projects in New South Wales, ACT, Western Australia, Victoria and South Australia. In addition to running heritage consulting practices I was Victoria’s Senior Project Archaeologist at Aboriginal Affairs Victoria and the Executive Officer for the Willandra Lakes Region World Heritage Area working in the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service. I have presented papers at varying conferences including those of the Australian Archaeological Association, World Archaeological Congress and Asia-Pacific World Heritage Managers workshops. From 2014 to 2020 I was a member of the ACT Heritage Council, representing the discipline of Archaeology. I have well developed fieldwork skills in archaeological survey, field recording, artefact identification/analysis, all scales of excavation and associated documentation, and GIS based field recording. I have managed teams of up to 50 people undertaking concurrent field survey and excavation projects. I am currently a consultant in Cultural Heritage Management, specialising in Aboriginal Heritage Management. I undertake research, development and implementation of field survey strategies, report preparation, significance assessment and development of management strategies. I have extensive experience in conducting test excavation, salvage excavation, artefact analysis and GIS field recording. Liaison with Aboriginal communities and developers from the public and private sectors is a crucial part of my current role.
