About Douglas Calem

I believe success at work is based upon building relationships, which is applicable for work both with clients and employees. Building relationships should be an easy thing to do but not everyone comes by the soft skill of relatedness or connectedness naturally. In my experience, the hard truth about soft skills is that they are necessary for organizations to excel. There is no doubt that organizations and teams need competent employees with the right “hard” skills to sell and deliver quality work. But in over two decades as an IT consultant, I’ve found that hard skills by themselves do not guarantee success. Most organizations declare that “people are their most valuable assets.” Yet there is a large gap between such a declaration and actually knowing how to engage employees. I spend a lot of time thinking about and working towards narrowing this gap. I spent over 18 years on projects, delivering IT services to our clients. Currently, I manage several accounts, help with business operations of our local sector, work on business development (proposals) and ensure the quality of our internal business processes. I am a lifelong learner, relishing the input of new ideas and eager to try them out in a practical setting. People say that I am a positive person, and that this positivity helps me put things into perspective and see “the big picture.” The most significant of all my strengths, I believe, is my ability to connect with others.
