About Douglas Carr

I love numbers and how they can tell us about the world around us at almost any scale. As a little kid with a passion for sports I definitely received some "smile and nod" moments from my parents when we'd be sitting at the dinner table and I was busy rattling off statistics of my favourite baseball players or using numbers to tell my dad just why that player he was critical of was actually performing a lot better than he was giving them credit for. And while sports statistics were my early entry in to the world of data and numbers, I became truly fascinated by what data could tell us when a high school teacher began our days with snippets from the book "Freakonomics". From then on I devoured new content that used data to illuminate our world, from Moneyball to economic indicators and everything in between. My professional data work is spent mostly working in R, SQL Server, and MS Excel, but I also have experience working in Tableau and Python for personal and/or academic projects. My most substantial data projects to this point include fully re-writing my organization's monthly reporting process out of Eviews and into R to dramatically reduce the time that took to execute, and fully re-designing the monthly statistical reports released on the status of the real estate market in Calgary and across Alberta. While my actual career has entered the data and analytics realm only recently, I'm so grateful for all of the work experience I've had that led me to this point. Opportunities like experiencing the culture of Apple during the growth of iPhone and the launch of the iPad, running new employee training programs, operating in customer support and service roles, and experiencing the pressure that comes with officiating elite level minor hockey have helped develop my skills in ways that have been invaluable in my life both personally and professionally.
