Background

About Douglas Fowler

Currently the position of graduate student culminates after a career of education, training, and work experience in both the professional and vocational realms. Professionally I began with a Journeyman Carpenter Certification after a four year apprenticeship recognized by the US Department of Labor, an Associate of Engineering in Construction Engineering Technology, a Bachelor of Science in Vocational Education and a Masters of Divinity. Graduation at the Mackie School of Log Building proceeded many years in log building, timber framing, structural carpentry, & custom woodworking. From proto type designs, shop fabrication and field craftwork, projects have been created or restored for many clients desiring traditional and historical reproductions and restorations. The appreciation of the marriage between the arts, architecture, history, and the vocational crafts and trades, is now being pursued in the Graduate Public History Program @ UCD with a Certification in Historic Preservation. As a part of this program I was an intern in the Heritage Partnerships Program at the National Park Service Intermountain Regional Office in Lakewood CO from Feb 2012 to Aug 2013 formatting Historic American Buildings Surveys for the Library of Congress. With an appreciation for the HABS program administered by the National Park Service, my paper, The Historic American Buildings Survey: Preservation of the Built Arts, was published in the Historical Studies Journal, Spring 2013 Volume 30. At the 2008 Saving Places Conference, Promoting Colorado’s Heritage, I presented the historic preservation project Restoring Colorado’s Rustic Treasures & in 2014 @ the Saving Places Conference, Preservation in Plain Sight, I presented research on Saving Folk Architecture of the Rocky Mountain Mining Frontier. Awards have been the Ward Family Prize 2015 for Promoting History through Historic Preservation & the David Owen Tryba Prize 2012 for outstanding work in Historic Preservation.
