In a typical new facility, the Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) systems can account for 40-50% of the total building construction cost and a large percentage of future operating costs. Designing MEP systems is every bit as critical as the selection of an architectural firm that will design the building. While these systems may be somewhat “invisible” to the casual observer, if they are not carefully designed, employees and visitors will incur varying degrees of discomfort and even increased health risks while occupying the building. Critical facility attributes such as worker performance and comfort, infection control, and the safety of visitors and workers are all impacted by the design and performance of the MEP systems.
