About Douglas Thorpe

I have pursued a passion for fisheries which has culminated in 9 years of diverse experience split between Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) and the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC (FFSBC). My recent experience involves 4 seasons with DFO as an eg-01, eg-02, and eg-03 technician working with Fraser River Pacific salmonids. I have developed hands on experience in mark-recapture, ground count survey methods, installing and monitoring hydroacoustic technologies, and fish fence operation for adult and juvenile population assessment. In addition, I have spent significant time operating jet boats, conducting drift surveys form rafts, and with live-fish capture and biological sampling methods through various projects. Experience with FFSBC involved technical and outreach work. Technical work experience included fish husbandry at all life stages along with biological sampling plus live and lethal (gill net) fish capture methods. As part of my outreach work I presented rudimentary and technical information to members of the public of varying ages and knowledge; to help people gain a better understanding of fish and the science surrounding them. During my free time I am usually outdoors or busy staying fit. I enjoy cycling, running, skiing, fly-fishing, and weightlifting. I also spend time on the rugby pitch as a certified World Rugby Referee. Part of my cycling training occurs on the Zwift indoor training platform, where I also take part in team based point races and team time trials. I am dedicated to improving myself professionally, recreationally, and sharing my knowledge with others.
