Background
About Doyle Crosswhite
My education includes a Bachelor of Science in Biological Science with a minor in Chemistry and a Master of Science in Zoology. I have extensive grant writing, project management, field research, and scientific writing experience. I have designed and taught a wide variety of middle, high school, and college-level courses including on-line classes. At St. Gregory's University (SGU), I helped design a four-year accredited program in Conservation Biology and chaired both the Faculty Life and Academic Standards committees- two of the university’s most important faculty appointments. Each semester I advised 30-40 undergraduates and managed a laboratory staff of 12-15 interns. From 2004-06 I served as The Nature Conservancy’s first Ozark Rivers Project Manager. I worked with local landowners, corporations, government agencies, donors, and science and philanthropy staff to establish and fund conservation priorities. We used global positioning systems and mapping tools to inventory unpaved roads and hosted workshops for county officials and road crews, demonstrating how improved road construction and maintenance techniques can keep excess sediment out of streams. As a former teacher, I believe that to help students achieve their learning goals; I must have a clear set of measurable objectives that students can follow. Foremost, I act as a guide by pointing students in the right direction to find answers and solve problems on their own. To this end, I strive to make my classes as enjoyable, practical, and beneficial as possible for students. I enjoy seeing students discover and appreciate concepts, their real-world implications, and practical applications. Ultimately, I believe my primary responsibility as a teacher is to assist in the intellectual and social growth of students. I want to motivate my students to be active, life-long learners. I try to teach in a manner which captures students’ interest and encourages them to independently problem-solve. I vigorously incorporate rapidly evolving educational technologies and techniques. For example, I maintain a syndicated blog site and a wiki, where students can access course materials 24/7 from any computer or smart phone! At the same time, I use “traditional” formats. I believe that I have a talent for organizing complex thoughts and concepts and communicating them in a straightforward and meaningful way. I work well with others and firmly believe in attention to detail, responsibility, honesty, integrity, teamwork, and open communication with my colleagues.
