About Duncan Bates

Duncan is a results driven designer with a formal education in Architecture from the University of Waterloo. He approaches all facets of architectural design with a formal understanding and critical interpretation of the intersection between the built environment and societal and geographic context. The cultural value of spaces we occupy at home, for employment, for worship or entertainment continue to inform and direct Duncan's rigorous and responsible approach to architectural design. As an advocate for critical regionalism, Duncan has established domestic as a practice to explore local and regional design vernacular in research and competition based contexts and in response to the prevailing globalization of design and architecture. He has also recently flown the coop and returned to academics in a part-time capacity to complete his Master’s Degree in Architecture and is currently researching the reciprocal impacts of branding, marketing and architecture.
