About Duwayne Dale

Dr. DuWayne Dale joined the faculty of Morehead State University in 2017 after eighteen years of teaching high school band and orchestra in public schools in Ohio and Kentucky. He has served as adjunct music education and private applied faculty at Kentucky Wesleyan College and as a Regional Arts Specialist for the Kentucky Department of Education. Programs under his leadership have had a consistent reputation for performance excellence in both the concert setting and in the marching arts. Dr. Dale is an active instrumentalist, having performed on trombone with the Dayton Jazz Orchestra, the Kim Kelly Big Band, the Owensboro Symphony Second Street Big Band, the Bend in the River Brass Band (River Brass), the Cave Run Symphony Orchestra, and numerous other ensembles over the span of his teaching career. Dr. Dale holds a Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music degree from Morehead State University. He earned post-graduate teacher certification (Kentucky Rank I) focusing on music education and conducting at the University of Kentucky, and completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Music Education at Boston University. He is a member of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME/KMEA), the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA), and the National Band Association (NBA). He has been honored by membership in the prestigious Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity, with honorary membership in the Theta Pi chapter of Phi Mu Alpha, and as a Friend of the Arts by the Gamma Upsilon chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota. He studied conducting with Dr. Richard Miles and Dr. Cody Birdwell, and he studied trombone with Dr. Andrew Glendening. Dr. Dale has contributed to GIA Publications’ Teaching Music Though Performance in Band series and has been interviewed by School Band and Orchestra Magazine on the topic of helping young music teachers to overcome early career hurdles. He is a past editor of the Bluegrass Music News, the official state publication of the Kentucky Music Educators Association. He was named the 2012 KMEA second district High School Music Educator of the Year, the 2018 and 2020 KMEA eighth district College/University Educator of the Year, and has twice been honored with a Citation of Excellence from the National Band Association. Dr. Dale is in demand as a guest conductor and clinician and maintains an active schedule working with high school and middle school bands, conducting regional honor bands, and adjudicating music festivals and competitions.
