After high school I attended the AFC(army foundation college) in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. Whilst there doing my phase 1 training I gained fundamental organisational and time management skills. Nearing the half way point in my phase 1 training, I decided to pursue my minimum national education requirements to give me more opportunities to progress in other fields outside the army or different roles in the army. Due to covid the educational programs offered at the time at AFC Harrogate were effected. This resulted in me unable to attend the lessons and ultimately the exams for maths. However, I achieved level 2 functional skills english which is equivalent to a GCSE 4/C. At this point I was given two options, either I could stay infantry and pursue my maths education later in time, or I could leave before my contract for minimum mandatory service started and pursue education elsewhere. The latter seemed more appealing at the time so I decided to leave and as soon as I got home, not soon after I was at the Manchester college looking to join a course where I would also have the opportunity to get my maths. A new course had recently been created and started being taught at the Manchester college and at the time they were looking for student to join the course to get it up and running properly, it’s called a T level for technical level and I did mine in cyber skills for the digital age where I achieved a distinction - merit. After completing this course at the Manchester college I decided to keep on learning computer hardware and software skills. To do this I stayed at the Manchester college and progressed on to a more theory based course which primarily focused on computer science this would have been equivalent to an A level. I decided that this course was not something I wanted to do as I had no intention of learning again what I learnt in the previous course with the possibility of failing. Because of this I left the Manchester college and started working at a casino as a croupier/dealer whilst I looked for a more practical approach to learning computer skills. At the end of the training period for new croupiers I had found an apprenticeship with Baltic apprenticeships doing the level 3 software development course. After securing a place they helped with finding a placement in the Manchester area and allowed me to complete maths. This placement ended up being at Ceedbox where I am currently finishing my level 3 software development apprenticeship. Thanks for reading.
