Background
About Dylan Laufenberg
I am a software developer with an MS in Computer Science focused on systems and databases. As a lifelong programmer, computer enthusiast, and volunteer, I bring a wide range of technical knowledge and soft skills to my work. As a human being, I consider myself to be patient, detail-oriented, and kind. My prior experience covers over a dozen languages, from standards including C, C++, Java, C#, and Python to less common languages including Ruby, Haskell, and Rust. I have historically been a polyglot, though I am currently focusing on writing Linux software in Rust. My recent personal projects in Rust include a SQL-inspired Linux terminal filter called GroupBy and an Ansible-inspired tool called Sira. GroupBy groups lines of input and runs the same command sequence on each group, akin to a SQL query with aggregate functions and a GROUP BY clause. My most recent personal project, Sira, is a Linux-only remote administration tool for small networks like home labs. Sira makes it easy to write scripts in arbitrary languages and deploy them across a network. It also focuses heavily on security, e.g. signing and verifying inputs on both control and managed nodes. Both Sira and GroupBy are multithreaded, written in Rust, and available on GitHub (see contact info). As a graduate research assistant, I worked on a project warehousing and analyzing environmental sensor data using Python and PostgreSQL. I developed a small library to enable code reuse when generating charts, added 42 new sensors, worked with campus IT to develop and implement a long-term support plan for the project, and more. I am also a lifelong volunteer. I currently lead a small team that offers live family photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus during a soup kitchen's annual Christmas dinner. I provide the technical infrastructure, including custom software in C# to automatically print photos while balancing the load across available printers. Additionally, I am the website administrator, with a custom Ruby on Rails site that I am currently converting to use a combination of Jekyll and a custom microservice written in Rust with Actix-web. Previously, I served on a cooking team for the same soup kitchen, leading the team whenever the leader was away. Before that, I volunteered at a nonprofit resource center, where I set up three computer labs, wrote custom software in Java, and maintained the systems and network for the small-but-busy nonprofit.
