Dr. Ebrahim Patel specializes in Financial Innovation, ESG/Sustainability and Islamic Finance. He is responsible for Future Markets and Sustainability at Rand Merchant Bank, focusing on Global Markets. His interest lies in utilizing disruptive technologies such as AI, tokenization, gamification and ecosystems thinking to develop the capital markets of the future, with a particular focus on the theme of Sustainability. He is responsible for well known SA and world-first financial products, such as the trading of Krugerrands through the FNB Share Trading platform, FirstRand Krugerrand Bond, Krugerrand Custodial Certificates, Dollar Custodial Certificates, FNB Global ETN's and Shariah liquidity mechanisms. In total these innovations have amassed over R35bn in AUM. He has more than 20 years experience spanning strategy consulting, asset management and investment banking, spending the last 13 years in a financial markets and trading environment. Dr. Patel is a pioneer of Ethical/Islamic Finance and ESG, and in the past 5 years has Chaired a number of RMB Market’s ESG, Shared Value and Sustainability Working Groups and Forums. He is a former Board Member of Sustainable Trading, and a member of JSE/ASISA ETF Standing Committee. Dr.Patel has degrees in Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Law, Philosophy and a PhD in Finance from Wits Business School. He maintains a keen interest in Academia, serving as a guest lecturer, external examiner and tutor in Commerce and Law from time to time.
