Ed Michael is a Consulting Director on Palo Alto’s Unit 42 team where he leads reactive global teams in the largest DFIR engagements, serving as a trusted advisor to executives and C-suite on high-profile issues and to internal leads on investigative best practices and case strategies in some of the most advanced matters our clients face. Previously, Ed spent over twenty years as an Officer and Detective with the Orlando Police Department in Florida, where he served in the Technology and Forensics Unit, Digital Forensic Lab. Ed has been working in Digital Forensics and IR for over 15 years and has served as a Task Force Officer on the United States Secret Service Electronic Crimes Task Force and the FBI Cyber Crimes Task Force. In addition, he has consulted and developed for Cellebrite, a global leader in mobile and computer forensic solutions. Ed served as a Trainer and Course Developer for some of the most advanced courses at the US Secret Service National Computer Forensics Institute (NCFI) and has delivered training, forensics, and consulting across the country and globally. Ed has presented at numerous digital forensics conferences globally, including the National Cybercrime Conference, Techno Security, FBI National Academy Association, User Summits, HTCIA, and Blackhat. Ed served as an expert advisor and analyst on some of the nation’s highest-profile cases and has testified as an expert witness in sensitive matters around the country, including homicides, terrorism, and intrusion cases. He has awards from the FBI, US Secret Service, US DoD, Met Police, New Zealand Customs Service, and the Kingdom of Jordan, to name a few, in recognition of his expertise and case work. Ed holds a B.S. in Information Security and has earned numerous certifications through SANS GIAC, IACIS CFCE, and numerous other valued credentials through software vendors, CompTIA, ISC2, and more. His previous law enforcement roles include patrol, K-9, and SWAT.
