About Eddie Kramer

Amongst the group of database engineers with 40+ years of experience, I am just a little below average. My motto is : The data is in the data. Or maybe : Good data is expensive. Bad data is more expensive. I have been a Database Engineer since 1983. As part of my graduate degree I took 2 database systems classes (C.J. Date texts) before I started doing any database programming. From day one I like to think that I have been theoretically sound. Actual database management systems where hard to find then so I started with the dBase II 5.25" floppy disk in the A: drive and the data disk in the B: drive of an IBM PC for my required Independent Project class. The upgrade from DOS v1 to DOS v2 was worth it. Directories! Thanks Bill. Before I began learning about database systems I had been a Certified Public Accountant for a number of years - primarily at what is now Ernst & Young. Accounting systems are not referred to as a type of a database system but that is what there are. This was my introduction to system thinking. An accounting system database is constrained by an ironclad need to be internally consistent - the debits need to equal the credits. For me databases have always been not just a place to store data, but data that is internally consistent. How neat is that?
