About Edgar Hertwich

Principal Research Scholar, International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis Professor of Industrial Ecology, Norwegian University of Science and Technology Member, European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change Member, International Resource Panel Past President, International Society for Industrial Ecology I have been recognized for publishing the first quantification of carbon footprints of different countries and for the development of scenario-based life cycle assessment. My research has been used extensively for policy making. I currently work in three areas:(1) The contribution of materials to global carbon footprints and the role of material efficiency and the circular economy in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.(2) Options to reduce environmental impacts of energy systems, addressing life cycle emissions of greenhouse gases, pollutants toxic to humans and non-human species and other chemical impacts, as well as the use of resources such as minerals, land, and water.(3) Understanding and shaping global production-consumption networks, including the economic specialization and consumption patterns and lifestyles.
