Background

About Eduardo Carrera

Eduardo Carrera is an Ecuadorian curator, art historian, and writer based in Philadelphia. Specializing in modern and contemporary art, his work draws on decolonial and queer approaches to examine artistic practices across the transnational Americas in relation to modernity, histories of dispossession, and the politics of gender, memory, and ecology. He researches queer-cuir, HIV-positive, and Latinx artists often excluded from U.S. art histories and explores translation as a curatorial methodology across English, Spanish, and Portuguese.Carrera is a PhD candidate in the History of Art at the University of Pennsylvania and a recipient of the James D. McDonough Fellowship in Queer Art History. His dissertation examines new perspectives on Social Realism and its genealogies with contemporary art in Latin America and the United States, emphasizing transnational networks, decolonial perspectives, and queer methodologies. He holds an M.A. in Art History from the University of Pennsylvania, an M.A. in Cultural Management from the International University of Catalonia, and a B.A. in Visual Arts from the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador (PUCE).Since 2021, he has collaborated with Wrightwood 659 in Chicago—first as Associate Researcher for The First Homosexuals: The Birth of a New Identity, 1869–1939, contributing research on Latin America, and, since April 2025, as Associate Curator for Dispossessions in the Americas. Between 2020 and 2024, he received fellowships, including the MACBA Independent Study Program (PEI), the Independent Curators International Research Fellowship, awarded through a Marian Goodman Gallery initiative in honor of Okwui Enwezor, a Visual AIDS Research Fellowship, and the USLAF Writing Open Call. From 2017 to 2022, he was Curator and Coordinator of the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Quito (CAC), and in 2023, he served as Artistic Director of the 62nd Salón de Julio at the Museo Municipal de Guayaquil. He co-founded and directed No Lugar in Quito (2010–2016). Carrera has contributed extensively to exhibition catalogues, anthologies, peer-reviewed journals, and international art magazines, including Phaidon, Artpress, L’Internationale, Artishock, La Escuela, and Terremoto, and collaborated with institutions such as the Penn Museum, Matadero Madrid, MACBA Barcelona, ARCO Madrid, the Han Nefkens Foundation, Felipa Manuela, the United Nations, Fundación Museos de la Ciudad, IILA, Museo di Roma, PIVO São Paulo, and the Cisneros Institute at MoMA.
