About Edward Houle

My passion for architecture, its history and sharing what I’ve learned with others has led me on a unique journey. During my co-operative undergraduate and professional graduate studies in Architecture at the University of Waterloo, I especially enjoyed the programme’s cultural history courses, a study term at the School of Architecture’s studio in Rome, and the opportunity to produce a historical research thesis. I then worked at a junior architect level on new construction projects in Toronto, before embarking on a Doctorate in McGill University’s Architectural History and Theory programme. While working on my dissertation about Louis XV’s private dining rooms at Versailles PhD, I undertook a year of research in France and presented papers at academic conferences in Canada and abroad. Following my dissertation, I taught undergraduate architectural history at McGill University for four years. I also returned to architectural practice, this time in the field of heritage conservation, where my roles included design, project management and construction supervision, as well as producing feasibility studies, heritage reports and conservation plans. More recently, my career has concentrated on heritage studies, historic building inventories and conservation reports, as I have refocused on historical and heritage analysis and writing. I also enjoy volunteering as a heritage guide presenting walking tours in a variety of Montreal neighbourhoods. Skills: Research, writing, historical building survey and analysis, teaching.
