About Edward Kim

I came to Helsinki as a Fulbright Scholar to research biochemistry and got lost in the possibilities of the emerging field of machine learning. With a solid foundation afforded by my education, I started as a Data Analyst developing DataOps infrastructure and pipelines and worked my way up to Machine Learning Engineering in computer vision. My focus is on driving efficiency, scalability, and automation in DataOps, MLOps, and state-of-the-art research implementation to production. I always put people first—especially my team, and I believe in prophylactic and forward thinking. Lastly, I attribute my success to a strong growth mindset, productive habit building, and self-study. Projects & Experience - Ideated and brought together a cross-departmental team to implement statistical quality control and standardize the process significantly bringing down costs by over 80%- Spearheaded data-centric AI strategy that resulted in a huge performance improvement in LiDAR classification to allow for automation strategies to begin- Scaled data labeling operations with a small in-house team, implementing human-in-the-loop machine-assisted labeling, active learning, and handling noisy data annotations- Established DataOps frameworks from the ground up, setting the stage for seamless data operations and increased efficiency within our labeling team- Developed an image recognition pipeline for object detection and defect classification- Created algorithmic post-processors to enhance LiDAR classification data accuracy- Managed subcontractors, overseeing data I/O, quality assurance, and dataset design- Upskilled and mentored colleagues, resulting in two team members transitioning to engineering roles- Successfully represented employees in cooperation negotiations, reducing flight risks and fostering a positive work environment. Passions & Hobbies - Hosting and curating two web radios on the Finnish electronic music scene as well as some occasional resident disc jockeying in the local scene- Learning through self study and personal projects (currently learning Finnish and implementing classical papers).
