About Edward Winstead

I believe in the power of a good story. Since earning a master’s degree in Writing about Science from Johns Hopkins University, I have primarily written about advances in genomics and cancer research. My stories translate complex scientific findings into compelling, accessible narratives for a wide range of audiences, including patients, policymakers, and general readers. At the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), I wrote hundreds of news stories and developed feature-length articles on timely topics such as the impact of climate change on cancer care. Before joining NCI, I helped launch an online magazine focused on genomics and contributed to a book examining the decision to use the atomic bomb. Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of working with editors who pushed me to dig deeper and refine my storytelling. These experiences have strengthened my commitment to collaboration. I’m a team player who’s always ready to step in—whether it’s writing a press release or developing a primer on how artificial intelligence is being applied in cancer research. Social media has also played a key role in my journey. I helped shape NCI’s social media strategy, initially managing its enterprise accounts. More recently, I ensured the scientific accuracy of social content and shared best practices with colleagues across the institute and NIH.
