About Edwin Belder

I started out as a draftsman (drawing board) at Veth Consulting Engineers in 1992. In our department in Zwijndrecht I primarily made manually made drawings for our contractor Grootint, now known as HFG (Heerema) Zwijndrecht. After a few years (1995) I switched to CAD (Intergraph) and was involved in projects like railway stations (Leiden & Zwolle) and the Twin Towers for KLCC (Kuala Lumpur). By 1998 I was back in school (evening course Staalbouwkundig Genootschap/Bouwen met Staal;MBO+, Structural Engineering, BmS/MSEng) learning civil steel engineering. After finishing the course I became a civil engineer within the same company, but by now known as Iv-Consult. During that year I successfully completed the course HBO+, Structural Engineering, BmS/PMSE. In the year I was temporarily reassigned for three years to do projects at the Kalmar (Cargotec) office in Rotterdam to assist them in crane designs. During that period I learned about designing cranes while subjected to fatigue. A great learning opportunity. The following years I was involved in the refurbishment of several E.C.T. cranes on the Maasvlakte and the development a new quay cranes (R.S.T, Bristol, Guadeloupe etc.) and a ringer crane for Mammoet (HSS S690). In the recent years I am mainly occupied with projects for Heerema Marine Contractors in Leiden. This involves Grillage and Seafastening and Rigging design for heavy transports onboard barges and SSCV’s. Besides being a Lead Structural Engineer I am involved in committees regarding steel connections. For both BmS TC10 and ECCS TC10 I am a full member and secretary. This gives me the opportunity to gather knowledge about new developments in connection design and the related updates of the Euro-Codes.
