Background

About Edwin Johnson

With more than a decade's worth of teaching experience combined with a curatorial background, I am generalist in art history with a global perspective. I have experience doing research and critical analysis on contemporary art. This is combined with research, curatorial and teaching experience with the vast and diverse worlds of traditional African art and cultures. As a professor, I have implemented inclusive teaching strategies that reach all four corners of the classroom and teach practical approaches to art analysis. I have experience teaching a wide demographic, which has ranged from art historians, community college students to random people who decided to enter the Savannah African Art Museum. I also have experience with teaching and managing interns in addition working as part of a thesis committee. I have served as part of the Diversity Council at SCAD. I also served as the faculty advisor for the African Students Union. Additionally, I served as a faculty liaison for CS3 at SCAD which served the student population with special needs and accomodations. At SCAD, I was also recognized for my work regarding issues relating to gender in contemporary art. My engagement with gender studies continued at the Savannah African Art Museum within the context of traditional African communities. My qualifications and experience make me a versatile addition to either an art history department or within a museum context. My global approach to art history, combined with inclusive teaching strategies, make me an academic who is in step with current movements in arts education for today's students and museum visitors.
