About Edwina Bartlem

Edwina Bartlem is an independent, contemporary art curator, creative programmer, project manager, tertiary educator and researcher who lives and works on the land of the Kulin Nation in Melbourne. She teaches visual culture and media studies in the School of Culture and Communication, Faculty of Arts, University of Melbourne, where she is completing a PhD on the topic of 'surveillance art and culture'. Edwina also works as a Research Assistant on the 'Visual Arts Work: sustainable strategies for the Australian visual arts and craft sector' research project. Her area of focus is the "gender pay gap" and issues impacting on that professional status and income of diverse women and non-binary artists in Australia. Edwina has extensive experience curating and managing exhibitions, performances and public programs with artists and organisations both nationally and internationally. She is experienced at managing teams, schedules and project budgets. Professional experience includes: Acting CEO, Centre for Projection Art (CPA); Project Curator, CPA; Exhibitions Manager, State Library Victoria; Gallery Curator/Director, Counihan Gallery In Brunswick; Exhibition Curator, Manningham Art Gallery; Curator, Griffith Artworks, Griffith University Art Collection and Program; Gallery Director, Bartlem Galleries and Gallery Manager, Metro Arts in Brisbane. A passionate advocate for the arts, Edwina believes in the transformative potential of art, exhibitions and creative culture for individuals and communities. She maintains that art can be an incubator for political, social and environmental debate and change. She is committed to working in an ethical, respectful and collaborative manner with artists, creatives, curators, researcers and communities on projects.
