Since I have been working on the design and programming of computer based locomotive control systems. I have to deal on the one hand with modern PLC and fieldbus systems, such as CAN and MVB (additionally WTB), and on the other hand with the object of the control system, a diesel-hydraulic locomotive with its transmission, brake and auxiliary systems. Because the operation of a locomotive or a whole train is safety critical, all developments for the control system have to be done according to the actual safety standards, such as the CENELEC standards EN50128 etc.
