Background
About Eilis Hood
Eilis is currently a High School History teacher at Hill-Freedman World Academy in Philadelphia.Eilis was the founding Social Studies teacher at Building 21, a competency based high school in North Philadelphia that opened in September 2014. In addition to teaching History, she served as the school's Student Learning Objectives designee to help train and guide teachers through the state's SLO process. She served on the site selection committee to interview and hire new teachers and was part of the School District's Assessment Literacy Series in which a group of teachers worked to design high-quality assessments. From 2008-2014, Eilis taught seventh and eighth grade English and Social Studies at Edward Heston Academics Plus School. Students in her classes showed meaningful growth on the PSSA. She was a four year member of the school's Leadership Team as the lead teacher for grades 6-8. She worked collaboratively with the team to create a new school-wide positive behavior incentive plan to benefit school climate. The team developed a new mission and vision statement for the school outlining the goals for student achievement. The Leadership Team was also responsible for the yearly submission of a School Improvement Plan to the school district. While developing the plan each year, the team took into account both student and teacher needs and outlined a plan to acquire resources, training, and materials for the good of the school. Eilis was a two year fellow with the Teachers Institute of Philadelphia at the University of Pennsylvania which is part of the Yale University National Initiative to improve teaching in public schools. Eilis developed two curriculum units that were published online.
