Background
About Eleanor Welsh
As an English teacher, my passion lies not only in teaching language, but also in inspiring my students to become passionate about learning. My ultimate goal is to help my students develop their critical thinking skills, encourage them to ask questions, and guide them to find answers on their own. I believe in creating an environment in the classroom that is conducive to learning and growth. My teaching philosophy is centred on the idea that every student is unique and has their own strengths and challenges, and it is my responsibility to recognise and tailor my teaching to their individual needs. I strive to make my lessons engaging, interactive, and relevant to their everyday lives. My professional journey has been shaped by nearly a decade of experience working with vulnerable learners, many with SEND and EHCPs, in both teaching and support roles. During my time as a Senior Support Assistant (SSA), I contributed to an action research project as part of the OTLA (Outstanding Teaching, Learning and Assessment) programme, focused on enhancing collaboration between Learning Support Assistants and teachers to improve metacognition and learner independence (CET, 2017). This research experience deepened my commitment to a learner-centred approach, and highlighted the value of inclusive, team-based support strategies within the classroom. In Middlesbrough, UK, poverty is a significant concern, with around one-third of children living in poverty and many families facing economic challenges. This situation highlights the urgent need for educational initiatives that can provide support and opportunities for those who are not in education, employment, or training (NEET). I am committed to addressing these issues by offering education that not only teaches language skills but also fosters resilience and self-sufficiency. In conclusion, I am deeply committed to fostering a love of learning in my students and providing them with the tools and confidence they need to succeed, both in education and in life.
