Background
About Eli Smurl
Eli Smurl is an eager, organized, and determined individual seeking to establish a career in the world of Environmental Engineering. Before graduating from The Calhoun School, Eli worked for a youth soccer organization, Super Soccer Stars, where he was tasked with coach registration for summer courses and made the inner workings of the office run smoothly by asking for additional tasks everyday. His most important task that he completed in his two months of working there was researching other soccer organizations in New York City to multiply the amount of accessible fields that were available to Super Soccer Stars. At Union College, Eli flourished into a hardworking and ambitious student. In his first trimester, he and two other classmates designed and built a cereal and milk dispensing machine in order to accommodate people without full hand functionality (i.e. Parkinson’s, hand tremors, etc.). He received a 4.0 GPA that trimester and carried that momentum into his overloaded second trimester which he finished with a 3.9 GPA. His spring term allowed him to lead a team project where his group created a scaled model of a campus building. His intuition for the division of labor and proficient organization produced one of the best models in his first Civil/Environmental course. Additionally, during his winter term, he was accepted as a Water Quality Fellow at Riverkeeper for the summer of 2024.Twenty years after Union had dismissed their Civil Engineering major, Eli worked tirelessly to reestablish Union’s ASCE Student Chapter. He first led his initial executive board to becoming an official club on campus. His responsibilities included: leading meetings, networking with professional engineers, on and off campus event planning, and leading an ongoing effort to revive the Union College ASCE Build Team to compete in the annual ASCE Steel Bridge Competition by 2026.Eli is tremendously excited to continue his pursuit of constant achievement and finds no greater happiness than seeing himself and his team around him succeed in every way possible.
