About Elia Johnson

Elia Johnson is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the State of Connecticut and a Licensed Master Social Worker in the State of New York. She has over 9 years of experience in defender based social work and over thirteen years of experience working in the criminal justice system. She graduated from Columbia University School of Social Work in May 2014 with a Master of Science in Social Work with a concentration in public policy and a minor in law and holds a Post-Master's Certificate in Trauma Informed Clinical Practice from New York University. Elia is currently the Director of Social Work at Appellate Advocates integrating social work into post-conviction representation. Previously, she ran the Client Services Program at the Office of the Appellate Defender (OAD), one of the oldest social work and reentry program in an appellate office in New York City. Prior to joining OAD, Elia worked at Brooklyn Defender Services in the Adolescent Defense Practice. Working with youth ages 14-21 charged with felonies in Brooklyn. Previous work experience also includes as a Project Associate at the Correctional Association of New York and as a research assistant at the New York State Psychiatric Center and Center for Court Innovation. Elia holds a B.A. in Psychology from Barnard College and has been SIFI certified since 2016.
