About Elise Blacker

As an historian, I am passionate about examining the colonial realities of how history has traditionally been presented to the public at and by Canadian historical and heritage institutions and working to counteract that. My most recent large scale research project was my master’s thesis, titled “In Pursuit of a Canadian Identity: The Creation of National Colonial Narratives Through National Historic Sites in Nova Scotia, Canada”, which explored these issues in detail. As an experienced historical interpreter,(both in and out of mid-Victorian era dress), I am passionate about conveying all forms of history to the public. Over the course of the previous operational season I successfully redeveloped and restarted a Laundry Day Demonstration program at the Halifax Citadel NHS, which was an immediate success with visitors to the site, alongside carrying out my other duties as Assistant Interpretation Supervisor. I am always open to opportunities at any heritage organizations, and I hope to keep making history accessible and entertaining to the public while improving current structures from the inside out.
